The Yacht Basin is just before crossing under 1A - going South as I was, the basin is on the East side, just before you cross under the RR bridge. They don't show the channel on this map, but it goes back a ways and is very shallow at the entrance, even though they try to keep it clear. Go slow... Thse enclosed basins always smells a little like 'low tide', but other than that it was a pleasant way to wait out some windy, cold, rainy weather. Here's a link to google maps of Amelia Island. The railroad bridge is very busy, it closes several times a day. They had a van that they charge for ($5.00), but it allowed me to get away for a few hours and pick up a replacement bumper for the one offered up at St. Andrew's Sound entry - there is a West Marine Express just a mile away and lots of interesting sights on the island. I also got a handheld VHF radio, that I am thankful for, because the antenna blew off the mast in St. Andrew's washing machine. It fell into the cockpit, weirdly enough, but at least I have it and I know that I must not try to transmit from the radio. Why? Radio magic. I got a chance, as well, to get out among my species, picked up some bits that I needed for the water system on Doublewide, such as a plug to put into the 'saltwater washdown' hose that broke. The water system works fine, but there is a leak on the port side that I have to hunt down. I hope that it is not in the water heater, but that would seem likely, just because it is hard to fix. Personally, I would just bypass the hot water and forget about it. Getting off the dock there was tricky, and there was the typical brain dead dock hand that wasn't keeping an eye on Doublewide's stern, so she banged the dock slightly. No damage. But dang! |
